It's Time to Recognize those Folks who make Scouting Possible

Nominimate those Adults in your Unit (Den Leader, CubMaster, Committee Chair, Popcorn Chair, Camping Chair, Merit Badge Counselor, Life to Eagle Advisor, ScoutMaster, and the adult volunteer that picks up your scout and takes camping) for the Spirit of Blackland Prairie award. It's a simple way to say THANK You and believe it or not, volunteers enjoy that pat-on-the-back! Recipient receives award at the District Dinner on January 20th.

This presitgious Council level award is bestowed annually only on two individuals from our District that have consistently served for three years or more in some capacity at the District level.  Recipient receives award at District Dinner.


The District Committee is offering TWO NEW awards - The David F. Webb Leadership Award and the PHIL JOHN SERVICE AWARD. Find out more  here.


Den/Pack Behavior or Discipline Questions? -Join us at the next Cub Scout Roundtable to discuss the best methods and stratgies to use at your Den and Pack meetings. We want everyone to feel welcome while creating a fun and safe environment for cub scouts. Learn how on December 7 @ Walnut Hill Elementary PTA Hut.

LionThe LIONS are Coming! Circle Ten is participating in BSA's new pilot program --  LIONS  -- which introduces kindergarten-age boys and their families to scouting. Part of an exisiting Pack, this new Den meets two times a month - one for a meeting, the other an outing and is always accompanied by their adult partner. New Structure - Twilight Summer Camp - SAVE THE DATE! New this year to accomodate our busy families and volunteer staff, we begin Thursday evening, continue Friday evening with optional campover and finish Saturday by noon! June 7-9, 2018. If you register by January 1st your scout will receive an xtra T-shirt. More details coming end of November. 

New - Cub Scout Resident Camp - Circle Ten will be offering resident camp for three day sessions at Camp James Ray for Wolf and Bears. Thursday through Saturday. More information coming end of November!

WEBELOS ON THE WATER - What an Adventure!WoWFlyerDesign (copy)

Over 51 Webelos with their parent(s) attended the week-end campout at Trevor-Rees Jones Scout Camp. Friday night started with over-the-top cracker barrel including popcorn on a fishing pole (see Facebook). Saturday, rotations began between Archery & BB Guns (both LEVEL II), Survival kits, Shelter Building, Cope, Canoeing, and First Aid (see photo below - yes, those are Webelos putting out that car on fire!). After delicious dinner by host Troops, the Webelos enjoyed the scout-led campfire ceremony followed by apple crisps and vanilla ice cream dessert. WoW staffers made breakfast Sunday morning - breakfast burriWoW-FirstAidtos (eggs-in-a-bag) for all in attendance ~ around 178. A simple but meaningful Scouts Own concluded our Castaway Adventure.

Thanks to Troops 81, 718, 751, 778, 800 and 895 for hosting Webelos and staffing rotations, Camp Director Aaron Howell, Program Director Lalita Howell, and Registrar, Deb Lankenau.


oak_leafOak Leaf Training - The first leadership class for younger Boy Scouts. Theyll learn about the patrol method and basic camping skills. Fun weekend at Camp Wisdom taught by older Boy Scouts. This is a YOUTH LED program. Sorry, no parents allowed - only at graduation cermony Sunday morning 10am. REGISTRATION HERE until November 13, 11:55 pm. November 18-19th at Camp Wisdom. $35 per scout.

NEW - WINTER CAMP: Has Your Unit Signed Up?  -  This Hawaiian themed Merit Badge camp has something for all your scouts. December 26 - 31st at Trevor-Rees Jones Souct Camp, Clements Scout Ranch, Athens Texas. See Council's website here.

NEW - Merit Badge University sponsored by Circle Ten Council - Eagle required Merit badges offered plus several electives. $20 for full day course or two sessions. December 2, Camp Wisdom. Register here.  Flyer and more information here

2018 BP CAMPOREE - Hosted by the Makade Aki OA Chapter.  Patrols will compete using their scout skills, knowledge and team strengths to achieve their assigned mission. Troop 838 won the EAGLE TROPHY at Camporee FIRE and is hosting the community dinner Saturday night, then Scoutmaster dessert cookoff followed by the traditional Orderof the Arrow ceremonial call-out. Not to be missed. Troops must send their OA representative to staff meetings starting in January 2018, the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Begin your preparations and save-the-date. April 13-15, 2018 at Camp Constantin; $25 per scout; $15 per adult.

World Jamboree, Southern Region Area 2 @ Summit Bechtel Reserve - Circle Ten's contingent is limited to 144 scouts and 16 leaders and will fill up quick. July 22-August 4, 2019. $2,500 expected fees. Contact James Faircloth at 214-984-7606 or email here.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)- This week long training teaches scouts leadership skills such as team development, project management, and conflict resolution. This is the youth equivalent to the adult Wood Badge course. Some units require this course before scout may become a Senior Patrol Leader. Schedule and info here.

National Advanced Leadership Training (NAYLE) - For the older scouts who have taken NYLT, this week long course tests your leadership skills and helps you develop your own servant leadership vision. Select from BSA's high adventure camps for your venue.  Many of our BP older scouts have attended this class; if you want to talk to one, please contact webmaster. So, you want to be an EAGLE SCOUT? - Be prepared and read up on the process of becoming an Eagle at BP's Advancement site. Make sure your troop has a "trained" Eagle Coordinator or find an adult to mentor you. Keep an eye out for District's LIFE to EAGLE training. NEW- EAGLE SCOUT REGONITION DINNER - BP's annual awards banquet honors our Boy Scouts who have made their Eagle Rank in 2017. The Advancement Committee will also announce the Outstanding Eagle Project of the Year. Save-the-date for Saturday, January 20th, 2018 at  6pm, St. Monica's Family Center.

MAKADE AKI Monthly Meetings - Held the 2nd Tuesday of the Month at the Kaualoku's.  Planning for 2018 CAMPOREE begins.

CAMPOREE - Makade Aki Arrowmen plan and execute this district competition. Be sure you attend staff meetings to get the low down on the activities and scoring. January 2018 2nd Tuesday. Adults and Youth OA from all troops welcome.

National Order of the Arrow Conference 2018  - While the Miki Lodge will be sending the largest contingent in the US, our allocation is smaller than 2017. So, if you want to go might get active in your Chapter and your Lodge.

OA Summer Service Projects - time to start thinking about registering for your summertime fun providing cheerful service at BSA's high adventure camps.


NEW - Recognize the Adults in your Unit
Yep, it's time to start nomionating the folks in your UNIT that make scouting possible. It's quick and easy and means so much to be recognized. FOUR AWARDS:

  1. Spirit of Blackland Prairie - recognize the adults at the UNIT level
  2. David F Webb Leadership Award - recognize an adult at any level that are passionate about adult Training. A Unit Trainer, a leader who is passionate about being trained, or adult who encourages adults to be trained.
  3. District Award of Merit - those scouters who serve all Units at the District level for at least three consective years.
  4. The Phil John Service Award - recognize that scouter who has stayed around your Unit after his kids have eagled-out or aged-out. The Unit level of the District Award of Merit.

Wilderness First Aid - This is the 16 hour ECSI course designed by Philmont and meets the requirements for the BSA High Adventure Bases. Dates: Nov 10-12/2017, Jan 26-28/2018, Feb 23-25/2018, Mar 9-11/2018, Apr 6-8/2018, Apr 27-29/2018 and May 18-20,2018. More information on the website. University of Scouting - SAVE THE DATE - Saturday, January 6th, 2018
A whole day of training opportunities to expand your scout tool bag. From Cub, Boy, Venturing, General, to Commissioner's College, there is something FUN to learn for every adult in your Unit. Open to ALL Adult Volunteers.

Woodbadge - A two weekend long course to develop your leadership skills. "Just wish I would have taken when active in Cub Scouts" says recent graduate. Speak the language your scout speaks by going to Woodbadge. This is the adult equivalent of NYLT.  General Information & Registration.

2018 Florida Sea Base Volunteer Training Conferences: Join us in the beautiful Florida Keys to learn with experienced and informed Scouters with ample time to enjoy the climate and beauty (what's left) of the Keys! Exellent training, at the Sangre de Christo mountains, age appropriate outdoor programs for your kids, and over-the-top spouse program. My favorite is the world class COPE course. Check it out here.

Philmont Leadership Challenge - Ready to put your Woodbadge skills to the test? Define your Servant Leadership mantra at this week long course next summer. Best taken within one to two years of Woodbadge. Dates: June 30-July 6 and September 16-22. Check out the Philmont Training Center website for more information and to register.
